You need automatic or manual contents, per-article placement, custom TOC labels, heading exclusions and help maintaining links as articles change.

A practical example
Shorten a contents entry without changing the article heading. Save stable section links, then use diagnostics to inspect omitted headings or deliberately reassign preferences after an article is revised.
A sensible first setup
Requirements: WordPress 6.5+ and PHP 7.4+. Install matching Free before Pro; older tocgenius-folder installations need the documented migration.
- Back up and install the current Free ZIP on staging. Follow the migration guide when replacing the older plugin folder.
- Open Settings → TOC Genius and choose heading levels, placement and appearance. Check an article with at least three headings.
- Use the editor for labels and exclusions. Add Pro only when you need rules, shared templates or adaptive navigation.
Questions about TOC Genius
Does editing a TOC label change my article heading?
No. The label belongs to the contents entry. Existing heading IDs are preserved; deliberate stabilization can save missing IDs into your content.
What happens after an article changes?
Diagnostics identifies missing or omitted headings and unmatched preferences. You can reassign or remove saved preferences; the plugin does not silently guess a replacement.
Is TOC Genius approved by WordPress.org?
Free is awaiting review. Direct downloads and successful automated checks do not mean directory approval.
